Potential Over polish Speaker Series

Date: 1st March 2023
Location: Virtual and in person

We are very pleased to announce the launch of our #PotentialOverpolish speaker series.

Over the next few months we will feature high profile social mobility and diversity experts.

They will discuss the benefits and challenges involved with social mobility. We urgently need to prioritise potential over polish as we make hiring and promotion decisions.

There is a great mis-pricing of talent happening right in front of our eyes. In addition to the more visible diversity traits like gender and ethnicity, less visible ones like socioeconomic diversity often go unnoticed and are ignored within DEI.

Typically showing up in a lack of so-called ‘polish’, societal biases stack the odds against individuals from disadvantage and less privileged backgrounds. This shows up in representation across senior roles within our industry, with Bridge Group research showing that 89% of senior level employees come from professional backgrounds.

Over the next few months we will feature high profile social mobility and diversity experts. They will discuss the benefits and challenges involved with social mobility.

We urgently need to prioritise potential over polish as we make hiring and promotion decisions.

Listen to their thoughts on:

  • How social mobility can add to diversity of thought
  • Overviews of the business and moral cases for social mobility and greater levels of socioeconomic diversity
  • The political and corporate backdrop to social mobility in the UK
  • Practical interventions for early career and progression success
  • Best practice lessons and case studies for individuals & companies
  • Insider stories and career advice
  • Imposter syndrome, gravitas, growth mindset and accent bias

We will host five engaging live sessions in this series, scheduled at regular intervals over the next few months.

Rebel Ideas and Diverse Backgrounds with Matthew Syed

Please join us in this exclusive webinar with Matthew Syed who will use his Rebel Ideas framework to help us discuss how the finance industry is looking in narrow talent pools, overlooking socioeconomic diversity and missing out on diversity of thought.

He will share his radical tips on success that can as easily be applied to business as it can to everyday life.

He challenges hierarchies, encourages constructive dissent and forces us to think again about where the best ideas really come from.

In conversation with Andy Haldane: Why social mobility and truly diverse teams are great for business

Please join us for an engaging conversation between Andy Haldane, former chief economist at the Bank of England and current CEO of the RSA and David Aujla, co-lead of our Social Mobility workstreams

Andy draws parallels between his two historic employers and opens up about his personal and professional journey. As well as discussing imposter syndrome, he explains what he calls “Portfolio Choice Theory” and why we need to hire the right fit for the team, not just the right fit for the role.

Discussing the City of London Corporation’s Taskforce on Socioeconomic Diversity he states categorically that “the jury is in!” and goes on to give key recommendations for companies and highlights the importance of having first movers to mobilise our industry to truly change the dial on diversity, equity and inclusion.

By listening in you will learn how to navigate through social norms and language barriers in a workplace and why developing an inclusive culture is key for all firms. But above all, it is just a really fascinating chat. Enjoy.

Andy Haldane, CEO of the Royal Society for Arts and former Chief Economist at the Bank of England

David Aujla , Deputy Fund Manager – Multi Asset, Invesco
