I am a white Scotsman who grew up in Fife during the period of mine closures and unemployment. I studied Physics and Electronic Engineering at Edinburgh University.
My early career was at Scottish Provident, where I gained a scholarship which allowed me to study to become an Actuary. In 1995 I joined Standard Life Investments as an Investment Manager and from here my career developed and I became both a people manager and a member of the multi-asset allocation committee.
In 2006 I was appointed the Head of Multi Asset Investing and by 2010, was responsible for Multi Asset and Fixed Interest, at which point I joined the Board. Between 2003 and 2013 I designed the highly successful GARS solution, becoming the largest UK Mutual fund and fastest growing US liquid alternative fund. In 2013, I resigned to become CEO of Aviva Investors.
I continue to live in Scotland & have been married for over 20 years and we have 3 sons.
