Join the movement #IAMTALKINGABOUTBLACK

Date: 11th June 2020
We faced widespread unrest and anguish across the US and beyond, following the death of George Floyd. This was preceded by an incident in New York’s Central Park involving racism by a member of the financial services industry.

At a time when people were already anxious, many within our industry (and beyond) feel traumatised by these incidents. While you don’t have to be of a particular ethnicity to understand the pain, prejudice and injustice, it is the black community who are bear the brunt of this hurt and stress.

But how do we ALL move forward together from this? Against this backdrop, #talkaboutblack believed it is important to reach out to people of all ethnicities and launched the #IAM social media campaign, which aimed to:

  • Highlighted the structural obstacles black people have faced throughout history and still face today.
  • Demonstrated leadership from senior black professionals and allies to show that, despite racial disparities throughout the world, there is hope.
  • Recognised that we can all support each other and that everyone must stand together to create a fair and equitable society.

Speakers shared their own thoughts and feelings about recent events, as well as provided practical ways for all to make a positive and sustainable difference, in an open and candid discussion.
